Mission Opportunity
HELP FOR HAITI NEEDED SO BADLY DUE TO THE RECENT HURRICANES.
from John Lovelace
In 2004 I took a mission work group to Haiti for two weeks. We worked 8 hours south of the capital; thus we got to view a lot of this the poorest country in the western hemisphere. We worked with Jean and Joy Thomas who head up a very outstanding ministry in Haiti. I first met Jean Thomas back
in the middle 70's when I had a mission work group help the John Perkins Ministry. Jean was there learning more about ministry to the poor. Joy was a volunteer at the Perkins Ministry at the time. They met and later married. Pleas read carefully the following emails I received from Jean and Joy last week.and then hopefully you will feel led (and will be able) to help the poor Haitians out at this time.
FIRST FROM JEAN THOMAS;
I went to Haiti last week for the funeral of our senior pastor, Maxeau Bernadel. I arrived immediately after hurricane Gustav created havoc over the entire island. In all my life in Haiti, I had never seen such
devastation. As if the damage brought by Gustav was not enough, hurricane Hannah made a u-turn in order to inflict more pain on Haiti. When I talked by telephone to the staff in Fond-des-Blancs they told me that Gustav was just child play in contrast to what Hannah was doing.
The road into Fond-des-Blancs is cut off from every angle. Even if there were to be any relief assistance being offered, it could not be delivered. This scenario has repeated itself several times in the past; though never quite like this.
The way we would like to respond to this crisis is by focusing on a permanent solution to the road. We need a bulldozer on location to repair and maintain the road. And this is something we need to do now. I think we can find one for around $40,000.00 and another $10,000.00 for shipping and
custom fees. I need you to help us make this happen now so we can start the recovery process for our now isolated community of Fond-des-Blanc. Make your contribution to the Haitian Christian Development Fund and mail it to this address:

NOW THE EMAIL FROM HIS WIFE , JOY.
Jean rented a car at the airport and began the drive south. He says the first half of the drive was normal until he got to one of the geographical divides (Mt Tapion) between the capital and the southern peninsula. Once he got over that mountain nothing about the road was the same again. The
worst and most dramatic section on the main paved road was at Lake Miragoane where the lake level rose to cover the road. In the 26 years we have lived in Haiti we have never seen the lake rise that high. The road crosses it on its northern side where there is a small lagoon. Instead of building a
bridge over the lagoon a road dike was built. The dike was completely covered by water when Jean reached that point. Part of the guard rail was visible in certain sections, but not all the way across. However, there were lots of people wading along the sides of the road to help guide whatever cars were actually trying to cross it.
We have always called ourselves a mission of development, but we believe we will need to also become a mission of relief for a few months. Because so many roads are closed and with all the rain still coming it will be almost impossible for food to be transported into Fond-des-Blancs for market. What food does arrive will be expensive. We realize many communities in the US are also needed relief donations, but we ask that you give HCDF and Fond-des-Blancs strong consideration also. The best way to provide relief is actually through development through road repair.
NOW FROM ME AGAIN;
If you want the check you send to be used to help buy food and water for those needing it so badly at the present moment. Write a note to send along with your check saying this.
